    • Schools: 1st and 2nd St. Francis of Assisi in Spokane; 3rd and 4th in Spirit Lake (9 kids total in school) blew up ink well in class/splatter still evident decades later; 5th Marshall; St Francis; Gonzaga High School class of1940 (on Friday afternoon sang on the radio; Gonzaga University one year before entering military service.

      Enlisted in the Navy in 1941, prior to the War. Flew Corsairs, Avengers, PBYs and the B24 from the Carrier Ranger.

      Flight test school in Annacostia, DC.

      Married in 1946. Stationed in Idaho, Naval Air Station in Miami, FL and eventually at the anti-submarine warfare school in San Diego.

      Accepts job with United, but is then approached by old friend to join PSA flying DC-3s as Chief Pilot. Later flies 727s and 737s for PSA and privately.
      Sings Light Opera.
      Retires in 1982.

      PSA passengers flying out of San Diego in the 1950s may have heard their airline captain do more than speak about weather conditions over the intercom if their pilot was Mike Bogle.
      Mr. Bogle, who did acting on the side at San Diego's Starlight Musical theater, sometimes serenaded passengers, warbling songs from plays or tunes appropriate to the destination such as “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.”
      With his matinée-idol looks and romantic tenor voice, he might have made a go of it in Hollywood, but flying was his passion. Mr. Bogle spent more than 50 years as a pilot, most of that with Pacific Southwest Airlines, known as PSA.
      Mr. Bogle died of a blood infection March 6 at Mercy Hospital. He was 86.
      His love of planes began at 14 when he won a flying lesson at the Idaho State Fair. “Once they get the (flying) bug, it's all over,” said his daughter, Lucy Goodwin.
      She said her father had a chance to go to Hollywood after successfully competing on a national radio show, “The Original Amateur Hour,” in the late 1940s, but he wanted a career in flying.
      It didn't matter that his duties during PSA's early years included helping to load luggage and empty ashtrays; Mr. Bogle enjoyed his job and dedicated himself to the-then fledgling airline.
      In a 1988 interview with the San Diego Union, Mr. Bogle reminisced about his early years with PSA. “You'd see flights with only four or five people. We knew a lot of the passengers real well,” he said.
      The airline had six captains and six co-pilots when he started in 1951. He was promoted to chief pilot in the early 1960s and retired in 1982. By that time, the airline employed about 600 pilots. PSA was bought by US air in 1987 and the two airlines were merged in 1988.
      Friends and colleagues remember Mr. Bogle as an excellent pilot who was serious about safety but who also loved a good prank. The stories included him walking out to his plane wearing dark glasses and carrying a white cane or attaching a pirate like hook to his hand and letting it dangle from his uniform sleeve.
      Former flight attendant and longtime family friend Susan Callagy said Mr. Bogle never forgot a joke.
      “He had a whole Rolodex of jokes in his head. Any word could make him think of a joke. It was a joy to fly with him. He made it fun and he was an excellent pilot. He was one of those pilots who could navigate by the stars,” Callagy said.
      PSA co-founder Leo Leonard said Mr. Bogle was a part of the airline's success. “He was one of those who hung on while other airlines were saying, 'Give them 30 more days and they'll be out of business.' ”
      After retiring from PSA, Mr. Bogle flew with Scenic Airlines out of Las Vegas and worked for Cinema Air, flying WWII vintage aircraft for movies and commercials.
      Michael Patrick Bogle was born April 1, 1922, in Spokane, Wash., to Michael and Eva Bogle. He and his three sisters grew up in Idaho. He attended Gonzaga University in Spokane until joining the Navy in 1942.
      Mr. Bogle tried to join the Navy prior to World War II to become a test pilot but was deemed too tall at 6 foot 4 inches. Mr. Bogle liked to tell the story that once the war started, he was no longer too tall. He served in the Navy as a pilot until 1949.
      He met his wife, the former Geraldine “Jerry” Wolford, in San Diego where she was a Navy nurse. The couple married in 1946 and had six children. Mrs. Bogle died in 1970.
      His career with Starlight went back to 1948 when he was stationed in San Diego. He sang in the glee club at Gonzaga and tried out “just for fun” for a part in “Countess Maritza,” he told a San Diego Union reporter in 1963. He got the part and became a Starlight regular.
      Local actor and longtime friend Ole Kittleson described Mr. Bogle as an ideal leading man. “He had a drop-dead beautiful voice, matinée-idol looks. Nobody could have played Li'l Abner like he did,” Kittleson said. “He always had a joke for you but on stage he was letter perfect. He was a professional.”
      Mr. Bogle is survived by three daughters, Lucy, Kathy and Betsy, all of San Diego; a son, Peter of San Diego; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Maureen of Chicago. He was predeceased by two children, Michael and Eileen.
      Services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Immaculate Conception Church in Old Town, 2540 San Diego Ave.
