A short history of the Morrison family submitted by J Luanne Collins Maxwell
The Morrison's trace their lineage back nearly 800 years to the Gilmhoire/Gillemorrie. He was a son of Olaf, King of Norway, and Lauron, Scottish noble woman from Kintyree. Their Viking ship sank in heavy seas all Scotland in 1216. Ola, Lauron and infant Glimhoire clung to a piece of driftwood and floated to the Isle of Lewis, Gilmhoire married the last heiress of the clan Igaa. She held the Castle of Pabby on the island of Harris. The name Morrison comes from the Gaelic "Moor" meaning renowned or famous one. Sons would be called Moorosons or variants of the same. Two distinct branches evolved; the Morrison's of Harris and the Morrison's of Lewis.
Life became turbulent in violent through a series of inter-clan struggles, so about 1597, 60 Morrison families sought refuge on the mainland of Scotland and Ireland. Early immigrants to America were major Richard Morrison who commanded afford in Virginia in 1638; Daniel Morrison living in Newberry, Massachusets in 1690; and Andrew Morrison settled in New Hampshire in 1695. Some records are burned by the British but efforts to connect links are still progressing. In 1909, the clan Morrison society was organized to Scotland to find the person with the best hereditary claim. Dr. Iain Morrison who practices medicine in England, succeeds his father, Dr. John Morrison, as chief of the clan. I wonder Festival is held each October at Radford University, Virginia.
Stephen Morrison was born 1744 and married Mary Munyon and before 1774. He lived in Stafford County, Virginia before moving to Culpepper County Virginia. Their children were Nancy, John, Caleb and Tarpley and an adopted orphan, Caty. Stephen died in 1807. His will was dated April 6, 1807, giving 280 acres each to his wife and four children, as well as crops, livestock and personal possessions. Nancy married Benjamin Spenny; Caleb married Sally Browning; John first married Jane Mitchell and then for a second marriage Esther Douglas.

Charlotte was born about 1779 to Joseph and Nancy and Barbie. Both are buried in Goshen Cemetery, Newton Township, Muskingun County Ohio. Their children were Eliza, Joseph, Mary, Amanda, Cerene, Jane, Albert and Harriet. The family all moved to Muskingum County before 1831. Records show that Tarpley pidy taxes that year. Charlotte was a granddaughter of Thomas and Elisabeth Withers and Andrew and Jane Barbee of Farquier County, Virginia. Thomas Wiathers was a patriot in the Revolutionary war. He was one of several furnishing wagons and teams for the use of Wayne's Brigade and the local militia. His descendents are eligible for membership in the daughters of the American revolution.
All of Tarpley's and Charlotte's children were married in Ohio: Eliza married Jonas Burton; Joseph married Mary Ann Cherry; Mary married Noah Tanner; Amanda married Isaac Cherry; Cerene married Charles Worstalll; Jane married John Shields; and Harriet married William Smith.
Tarpley and Charlotte's son Albert Gallatin Morrison was born January 20, 1816, in Rappahannock, Virginia and died September 30, 1905. He married Melinda Selsam, June 8, 1845 in Muskingum County. She was born April 26, 1826, in Maryland to George Selsam and Nancy McMullen Selsam. Melinda died March 8, 1908. Both are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Muskingum County, Zanesville, Ohio. Their children were Stephen, Nancy, George, Samuel, Frank, Albert, John and Edward.
Stephen married Ida, Nancy married James H Jenkins; George married Sarah's Seright; Samuel married Emma Jenkins; Frank married Clara Pletcher; Albert Douglas married Margaret Wigton and then married Addie Dunham; John married Carrie Leasure; and Edward Russell Morrison married Annie Effie Longshore.
