  • Notes
    • In the Northumberland County Court of Quarter
Sessions of 27 Feb 1846, in the parish of Nelson, Inquisition on the body of
James BOGLE, held at the home f Rowland Crocker in the Parish of Nelson,
before James Wright (Esq) coroner. (Plus 12 Jurors). It was stated that on
the evening of February 25, 1846, the deceased was going down the Southwest
branch of the Miramichi with three other men in a sled. All had been
drinking quite freely at several taverns on the way down. The deceased had
become quarrelsome and took off his jacket to fight with any of the other
men, although none of the others were inclined to accommodate him. His
jacket had in the moment fallen from the sled, whereby the deceased went to
fetch it. All being in liquor, the others drove off leaving the deceased
behind. He then found that he was unable to find shelter and was not able
to get to any house. He had therefore succumbed (sic) to the cold and had
frozen to death on the highway, above Hugh Ferguson's on the southwest
branch. Verdict: Accidental death by freezing.

Also one James Bogle had petitioned for land in the parish of Blackville on
27 Dec 1837, stating that he had been living there since arriving about 14
years previously and had built a house and barn and cleared 7 acres, on a
lot on the south aside of the Cains River about 40 rods above the mouth of
the Sabbies River. He was allocated 50 acres at the squatters knock-down
price of 2 shillings per acre or 2s 6d by installments. No such grant is
shown in the index, so either it was abandoned or whatever. Also in the
petition he stated that he had served 12 years in his Majesty's Navy under
Sir Charles Grant and others and was invalided as a quarter gunner.
