Notes - The above photo is of Earl Hirst (photographers left, in head bandage) shortly after he was attacked by a bear. The date on the picture shows August 13, 1917. The notes on the back of the picture state "After the bear fight. Peterson & Earl Hirst"
One of the often told family stories is how Earl Hirst was attacked by a bear in Alaska near the Copper river. According to Mike Bogle, Son of Eva Hirst Bogle, Earl Hirst and Peterson (other man in photo) were walking on a trail. Peterson was in the lead. Earl was unaware that a Kodiak or Grizzly bear was coming up behind him. The bear struck Earl in the head tearing off a large chunk of his scalp. Earl was knocked unconscious from the blow. The bear then went after Peterson, who began to run. When Earl regained consciousness he saw the bear chasing Peterson, so he grabbed his gun and took off after the bear. He was able to get a shot at the bear and killed it.
Part of his scalp was still attached to Earl's head, so they cleaned the wound and bandaged him up. His scalp reattached to his head and healed, but he suffered significant scars from the attack. One account says that he began parting his hair from the other side of his head and combed it over the scar. Another member of the family used to tease him, saying he thought they had put the scalp on backwards and that is why he parted his hair from the other side.
R. Allen Hirst.
