Notes - Obituary
Mr. Thomas J Hirst, one of the best-known and most highly respected residents of Newark, died at his home, 24 Clinton St., Wednesday at 1:40 AM. The deceased, who was a son of the late John Hirst who died in 1875, was born in the city where the Trinity Episcopal Church now stands corner of First and E. Main St.'s on September 2, 1837, and was therefore in the 66th year of his age. He was married twice, his first wife being Miss Esther A Taylor, daughter of Andrew Taylor, a prominent farmer, residing 3 miles east of the city. From this union three sons were born, Edward A, Frank T and Benjamin T Hirst, all of whom are living. His wife died in 1877. In 1882 he was married to Miss Celia J Hagerty, daughter of James B Hagerty and one daughter Miss Esther C Hirst who is the fruit of this union, and who with her mother and brothers survive to mourn the death of a loving husband and kind father. One brother, Frank of Bucyrus and one sister Mrs. Charles Smucker of this city. The deceased for many years had been a prominentOdd Fellow, being a member of Olive branch Lodge number 34; Mount Olive encampment number 12 and licking Lodge, daughters of Rebecca number 143. The funeral the held from the late home of the deceased, number 24 Clinton St., Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock under the auspices of the Odd Fellows, the Rev. LC Sparks officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery
